“My heart is, and always will be, yours.”

Oooh, another challenge. When I saw the girls at Cinema Saturday Creative Challenge had set Sense and Sensibility as the subject matter, and the challenge requirement was to create a clean and simple card, I just couldn’t resist.

Jane Austen has always been a big part of my life – ever since I studied Mansfield Park and Emma for 3 Unit English in highschool, I have loved her books. I even wore a regency inspired dress for our wedding, and we danced the same english country dances at our reception that Miss Austen herself may have wittily remarked upon in her letters to her sister.

That being said, I haven’t always been a big fan of the movie adaptations. They didn’t always seem to capture the wit and subtle social nuances contained in Jane Austen’s novels. So many times I had got my hopes up, and they were disappointed.

Emma Thompson’s Sense and Sensibility however, is a triumph. I love it. I have spent many lovely evenings and afternoons watching as Marianne wears her heart on her sleeve in her passionate pursuit of Willoughby, and Elinor quietly and steadfastly keeps her love for Edward alive, even though it looks like it will never be realised. And Alan Rickman is just perfect as Colnel Brandon. That voice!!

Anyway, back to the challenge. I had so many ideas for the front of my card – a letter, to represent Marrianne’s passionate epistles to Willoughby, a silhouette portrait, Edward’s handkerchief, carried about by both Elinor and that poser Lucy Steele. And then I decided on a pocket. Elinor’s love for Edward, which burns just as brightly as Marianne’s, is kept contained within her, and its only outward appearance is the handkerchief that Edward gave her, which she carries with her everywhere in her pocket.

I’ve kept my colours quite subdued. Certainly Celery and Very Vanilla make the perfect Regency wallpaper using one of the now sadly retired Sale-a-Bration stamps  from the Vintage Labels set. A Certainly Celery grosgrain ‘bonnet’ ribbon adorns the top of the card, and my little ‘pocket’, created with the Scallop Edge Punch, displays Elinor’s constant affection for Edward, in that he is always in her thoughts. I’ve stamped the sentiment (from the Whimsical Words set, also a Sale-a-bration set now gone) in Old Olive, just to give it a bit more weight. I’ve also used the Scallop Edge Punch on the bottom of the card, so that a Certainly Celery ‘petticoat’ shows through.

I had so much fun thinking about this card – I think I shall have to watch Sense and Sensibility on the weekend yet again. No doubt my poor long suffering husband will roll his eyes and remark, ‘Is this the one with Darcy in it? Again!?’

No my darling, I’m saving Colin Firth’s Darcy for dessert… 😉
